Germany’s delayed arms deliveries to Israel are currently causing considerable irritation. This failure to act on the part of the federal government contradicts Germany’s repeated affirmation that the security of Israel is German raison d’État – a principle that results from Germany’s historical responsibility towards the Jewish state. It is an irony that Germany hesitates to supply its most important partner in the Middle East with the necessary military resources, while it increases arms exports to states that support terrorism worldwide, such as Qatar. This sends a fatal signal, both outwards and inwards.
Israel finds itself in an extremely precarious security situation. It is surrounded by enemies that have always threatened its existence. Part of the truth is also that the capacity for defence does indeed include “offensive weapons” if one wishes to counter the terrorist threat from Hamas and the like appropriately. In this situation Germany must act as a close ally and do everything in its power to ensure the defence capability of the Jewish state. The delays in armaments deliveries, especially in times of growing threats, could lastingly weaken Israel’s trust in Germany as a reliable partner.
The German principle of raison d’État demands not only words, but also deeds. The security of Israel is not only a moral obligation for Germany, but also an essential component of stability in the Middle East. A strong Israel is decisive for guaranteeing peace and security in the region. Germany has always positioned itself as a friend of Israel and has emphasised the importance of Israeli security. Now is the time to put this commitment into practice. The arms deliveries must not be delayed; on the contrary, they must be accelerated. Israel stands on the front line in an ongoing struggle for freedom, democracy and security in the Middle East.
The federal government must unmistakably strengthen the close relations with Israel at the security policy level as well and ensure that Israel is at all times in a position to defend itself against threats.
