WerteInitiative: Appeal on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Shoah to bear responsibility arising from history.
Berlin, 27.01.2022 – Today marks the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Since 2005, 27 January has also been observed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This commemoration of the Shoah is meant to guard against the reinterpretation of history. Unfortunately, since the coronavirus pandemic society has increasingly experienced the trivialisation of the crimes of National Socialism, for example through inadmissible equations of today’s policy for containing the coronavirus pandemic with that of the National Socialist regime. WerteInitiative – jüdisch-deutsche Positionen e.V., which campaigns for securing a Jewish future in Germany, therefore calls, on today’s 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, for a renewed and stronger awareness of the free democratic basic values. The chairman of WerteInitiative, Elio Adler, therefore says: „So that ‚Never again!‘ also remains ‚Never again!‘, an answer is also needed to the question of ‚what a society stands together for‘. The inviolable dignity of the human being and all the other values of the Basic Law should be filled with life by all of us every day. We therefore also welcome the UN resolution against Holocaust relativisation that was adopted last week. On the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Shoah, but also beyond it, we must preserve the memory of the victims. Not because we bear responsibility FOR history, but because we have responsibility ARISING FROM it. And these victims admonish us to defend the values of freedom.
