Press release on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January

27. January 2023 AntisemitismJewish Life

Berlin, 22.01.2023 – On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January, we as a Jewish-German organisation are launching the campaign #Survivors.

From today, for ten days, we will post daily on our social media channels (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) one photo each from the series “Survivors” (by Jesco Denzel) of survivors of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, together with their names and short biographies. The chairman of the Jewish association WerteInitiative, Elio Adler, on this:

We want to remember the victims, but also to remember that we exist self-confidently today only because a few Jews were able to survive the Shoah. For Jews, ‘never again’ means ‘never again become victims’. For the descendants of the perpetrators, by contrast, it means ‘never again annihilate’. What connects the two is that remembrance provides orientation for today and tomorrow.

The start and duration of the campaign have symbolic significance: with this choice of timing before, on, and beyond 27 January , we would like to draw attention to the fact that those affected commemorate the murdered and remember the living not only on a single day, but on all other days as well. Only in this way can attention be drawn, beyond the symbolism of 27 January, to still-existing antisemitism and hostility towards democracy.
