The prominent Green politician was an important interlocutor for us – both in order to gain a better sense, through personal contact, of what motivates him, and in order to acquaint him with our association.
In our conversation yesterday with Cem Özdemir of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN there was a high degree of agreement on the need to preserve social cohesion. A state under the rule of law that is experienced as capable of acting, and that not only communicates its values everywhere in Germany but also enforces them, is an important precondition for preserving a free and open society. On the subject of integration it was clear: the Federal Government must be the principal point of contact for all people living here – whatever their origin – and not foreign governments. The instrumentalisation of sections of the population by the governments of their countries of origin divides society here instead of uniting it.
