Every organiser longs for a great deal of attention. The Jüdisches Museum Berlin, however, is likely to have wished for attention of a different kind. The museum’s W. Michael Blumenthal Academy is planning an international conference under the motto »Living with Islamophobia«, in cooperation with the Alice Salomon Hochschule, the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research and the Council for Migration. The event is due to take place on 11 and 12 October, but there is already harsh criticism. Elio Adler, chairman of the association »WerteInitiative – jüdisch-deutsche Positionen«, sees the conference as »part of the levelling out of phenomena that are equally reprehensible, but nevertheless very different: antisemitism and hostility towards Islam«. Together with more than 30 other Jewish organisations, his association drew up the »Statement of Principles on Antisemitism« in order to »counteract this trend towards levelling out«. Adler recommends that the Jewish Museum, »in view of further oddities, should write the word ›Jewish‹ in quotation marks too«.
