WerteInitiative e.V. is continuing its series „360° – Sicherung jüdischen Lebens der freiheitlichen Demokratie in Deutschland“. On the eve of Constitution Day – on 22 May 2023 – we addressed the topic:
“Mazal Tov Grundgesetz – felt, lived, together”
So far our 360° events have mostly revolved around the protection of democracy against various forms of extremism. This time it is about a different kind of protection of democracy and, at its heart, of Jewish life: how can the values of the Grundgesetz (Basic Law) – alive rather than merely theoretical – hold the centre of society together? What kind of shared, emotional basis can connect us and offer citizens a sense of belonging? On the eve of 23 May, the birthday of the Grundgesetz, we would like to discuss with selected, committed personalities, in the form of a round table, how the values of the Basic Law and the unwieldy concept of „constitutional patriotism“ could be filled with life. This also includes how a Constitution Day might look in future in order to make its significance more tangible for broad sections of the population.
At the head of the round table, the discussants were:
- Katrin Göring-Eckardt, Vice-President of the German Bundestag, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen
- Marco Buschmann, Federal Minister of Justice, FDP
- Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, SPD
- Mario Czaja, Secretary General, CDU
- Elio Adler, Chairman, WerteInitiative e.V.
Moderation: Ilanit Spinner (ARD/BR)
Also actively involved were:
Helge Lindh, MdB (SPD)
Misbah Khan, MdB (Grüne/Bündnis 90)
