Press release on the renewed debate: “Islam is part of Germany”

Opinions differ sharply on the statement “Islam is part of Germany”. The fact that this question has arisen once again shows that the answer given so far is not sufficient. What does “is part of” actually mean?

All the arguments for and against show one thing: we want to smooth the path for individuals into the centre of society, but to give no room to the political-religious ideology of Islamism.

The blanket assertion that “Islam is part of Germany” is unhelpful, because it serves as a licence for the agenda of legalistic Islam.

But the opposite, in its absoluteness, is equally wrong and offends the integrated, freedom-minded Muslims in our country.

Elio Adler, Chairman of the WerteInitiative/jüdisch-deutsche Positionen, comments: “There is certainly an Islam that is part of Germany, but there is equally one against which we have to protect ourselves. It is time to draw a clear distinction here and to show which Islam belongs with us and which does not. Many of those in positions of responsibility are reluctant to make this distinction; but without this sharp distinction the question of belonging will never be capable of being answered. ”
