For the passionate and eloquent criminal lawyer Thomas Fischer, his current book „Über das Strafen: Recht und Sicherheit in der demokratischen Gesellschaft“ is about what holds our society together: a set of rules we have given ourselves, our legal system, which depends on many conditions and is in constant motion. Like no other area of law, criminal law is the focus of public interest. As a basis for state action it promises security, but it is also a place where fundamental questions of social life, of the scope of freedom and of responsibility are negotiated and discussed. Fischer’s thesis: criminal law is communication and violence.
The former federal judge, who is well known far beyond his professional circles, reads from his book and afterwards talks with the lawyer Nathan Gelbart and with the audience.
Thomas Fischer, born in Werdohl in 1953, studied German literature in Frankfurt am Main as well as law and sociology in Würzburg. He is a legal scholar and former presiding judge of the 2nd Senate of the Bundesgerichtshof. He is known to a wide public through his popular and controversially discussed columns „Fischer im Recht“ and „Recht haben“ as well as through television appearances.
Nathan Gelbart, born in Frankfurt/Main in 1966, is a lawyer in Berlin and Tel Aviv. He studied law in Frankfurt and Mainz. His areas of focus are property and media law and German-Israeli legal relations.
