A state commissioner against antisemitism within the police force and a round table dealing specifically with the security of Berlin’s Jews are to be established. It is good that State Secretary of the Interior Akmann is taking action here and thus responding to our increased need for security. The concept for this was developed weeks before the attack on Rabbi Teichtal and is now being implemented. The fight against antisemitism is a task that runs through all political and social spheres.Because the positive effects of education and upbringing can only take hold in the long term, however, optimising our concrete security and the swift prosecution and punishment of any antisemitic offences is a short-term measure, and one that will hopefully deter perpetrators. We therefore consider it sensible to attach the antisemitism commissioner to the police. These steps make the Berlin Senate’s declared intention to take a leading role in the fight against antisemitism highly credible. We are glad to accompany this path.
