Statement on today’s Bundestag debate on antisemitism

On the debate in the Bundestag concerning antisemitism, the founder of the WerteInitiative, Elio Adler, states:

“Our group of Jewish Germans is appalled to see how the ever-latent antisemitism is being given fresh fuel by the current situation. Those on the right feel called upon to intensify their nationalist agitation. Among those on the left it is called “anti-Zionism” and manifests itself in an absurd degree of “criticism of Israel”. Parts of the Muslim communities are now also showing ever more clearly what anti-Jewish potential lies dormant within them.

What will happen when the hundreds of thousands of migrants, the majority of them socialised in an antisemitic and undemocratic environment, take to the streets? We Jewish Germans are concerned about social peace in this country and fear that the home we all share is losing its liberal core. France, England, Belgium and Sweden are undergoing a threatening development that we can also foresee here.

We urgently appeal to the Bundesregierung (German federal government) to take up the issue of “resurgent antisemitism”. This should be done, among other things, by appointing a Commissioner for Antisemitism at the Bundeskanzleramt (Federal Chancellery) who should be involved in all decisions affecting this area.”
