Berlin, 28.02.2022. In recent months WerteInitiative has conducted a survey among Jewish Germans on foreign policy topics. The aim of this survey is to shed light on a political topic that has so far been little visible: how significant is German foreign policy for Jewish citizens with regard to their own future in Germany? What are their assessments of particular foreign policy questions? The aim of the brochure developed from it is a stronger integration of Jewish concerns and perspectives into the foreign policy discourse of the Federal Republic.
Whether the Iranian nuclear programme, Russian expansionist ambitions, Turkish displays of poweror else peace developments between the Gulf states and Israel – foreign policy questions are as relevant in current day-to-day politics as they have not been for a long time. But what is the perspective of Jewish Germans on this policy area?
Elio Adler, chairman of WerteInitiative: „With our survey we want to capture a picture of the Jewish mood regarding German foreign policy, as this unfortunately receives too little attention in current discourses. 93 per cent of respondents stated that German foreign policy plays an important role for a Jewish future. All the more reason to give this topic attention from a Jewish perspective.“
WerteInitiative is therefore particularly pleased about the interest shown by Dr Tobias Lindner, member of the Bundestag and Minister of State at the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office), in the survey „Außenpolitik – jüdisch-deutsche Perspektiven. Stimmungsbild und Analyse“.
Elio Adler: „Wishes addressed to policymakers are bound up with this publication. Thus 61 per cent of respondents have the impression that Germany is not living up to its promise that Israel’s security is a German raison d’État. Likewise, for example, 96 per cent regard Germany’s handling of the Iranian regime as too weak. Jews in Germany have expectations of their country’s foreign policy which unfortunately have all too often been disappointed in the past.“
