In conversation with the Deputy US Ambassador, Robin Quinville, and the Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Sara J. Bloomfield, the discussion turned to similarities and differences in the field of remembrance work. In the USA as here, the willingness to read texts is steadily declining; people also feel so burdened by other, more pressing problems that interest in history is being pushed firmly into the background. Our chairman, Elio Adler, stressed in the discussion that for all those who wish to convey history, the relevance of history to the present day is particularly important; many of the answers to urgent contemporary questions can be found more readily through historical contextualisation or through historical experience.
