Two Berlin book presentations with Tuvia Tenenbom were cancelled. Yet in his books the Israeli-American author does exactly what cultural institutions constantly demand and ever more rarely practise themselves: he talks to people, even when their views are uncomfortable, contradictory or repellent. His new book “Wie nennt ihr dieses Land hier? Unter Siedlern” has just been published. For it he lived with his wife Isi in the so-called West Bank, Judea and Samaria – or, as he calls it, “BI”, biblical Israel. He met settlers and Palestinians, peace activists and radicals, politicians and journalists.
With him we talk about the cancelling of Jewish voices, about the ideological charging of the cultural sector and about a question that today seems almost provocative: what do we learn when we listen to people before we judge them?
