Israel as a perpetrator state, Jews who have supposedly turned from victims into perpetrators, the accusation of genocide. All of this has been and still is repeated so often that in some circles it is treated as an incontrovertible truth – imperviousness to facts included. So included that someone writes in the TAZ about his father, who is said not to have received the polio vaccination in time because the family was displaced in the Israeli-Arab war of 1948. That this vaccine was not approved for the first time until years later – never mind. We do not, however, want to focus on the TAZ so much as to ask: how is it possible that something like this is waved through without difficulty today, and not as a journalistic failure but as “criticism of Israel”?
Our guest is the lawyer and author Tilman Tarach, who commented on this case very pointedly. He works on the history of the ideas behind antisemitism and their effects. In his work he shows how notions of the God-killer, of the secret puppet master or of the Jew as perpetrator have changed and have carried on into today’s perception of Israel.
