In this episode we talk to the investigative journalist and author Sascha Adamek about political Islam, Islamist structures in Germany and the question of why the danger to democracy and to an open society is still being underestimated. The starting point of the conversation is the debate about the term “Islamophobia”: what does it actually describe – and where is it used politically to cast moral suspicion on criticism of Islamist ideologies and actors? From there the discussion moves on to the Muslim Brotherhood, its long-term strategies of exerting influence and the question of how far parts of this development have already become visible in Germany. It also covers the connection between political Islam and antisemitism, the consequences of this blind spot for Jews in Germany and the question of what a democratic state must do to defend itself without abandoning its liberal principles.
