This week our chairman Elio Adler met the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner.
Mr Wegner has been closely connected with the city’s Jewish life for many years. He is in good contact with the various communities and organisations and therefore has a good overview of the different areas of the Jewish community in the capital. The exchange between him and our chairman, Elio Adler, thus revolved both around current political issues and around the larger question of how the social and political centre, and with it democracy, can be stabilised.
One possible occasion for this is the anniversary of our Grundgesetz (Basic Law) on 23 May, which could be both a reason and an opportunity for a wide range of activities in this respect.
We as Jews in particular can only live in a society that actively lives the values of a free and democratic society. In Kai Wegner we have a strong partner for this need.
