The worrying developments surrounding the change of president in the USA, the handling of the pandemic, the aggressions of the Iranian regime, the growing Chinese exertion of influence in large parts of the world and much more – all foreign policy issues whose consequences are of great domestic political significance in Germany.
Accordingly, the threads of discussion in our chairman’s conversation with the foreign policy spokesman of the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Bijan Djir-Sarai, led again and again back to Germany.
The coronavirus pandemic with its medical and economic risks carries the danger that the above issues will slip out of focus and that one might be tempted to ignore them. Thus the current challenge for foreign policy makers is to keep a global view of a large number of fields of work despite “burning” issues on their own doorstep.
