An election poster is daubed with swastikas – and suddenly it is no longer only about local politics, but about the question of how resilient our democratic culture really is. In this episode of the WI-Talk we speak with Severin Kistner, candidate for mayor in Starnberg, about Jewish visibility in politics and about what incidents of this kind do to political participation – not only among those directly affected, but throughout the town’s community.
We talk about why Nazi symbolism is not “graffiti”, which lines a democracy has to draw clearly, and what has to happen so that Jewish life and Jewish candidates do not become a target – but are simply taken for granted as part of society.
