Our chairman Elio Adler was interviewed on 22 July in the “The Pioneer” podcast by Michael Bröcker. The subject was Jewish life in Germany and the hatred of Jews that is spreading once again. On the one hand, he said, 1,700 years of Jewish life in Germany were a reason to celebrate. However, the past few months in particular had shown how little normality was present after these 1,700 years of shared life. Adler mentioned the attack in Halle, the “riots in the context of the coronavirus protests, where massive antisemitism found a very large audience” and the “aggressive street scenes” during the most recent conflict between the terrorist organisation Hamas and Israel. Palestinians and Turkish citizens, he said, had rioted massively in Berlin and spread hatred of Jews. “You can see how extremely abnormal Jewish life still is after 1,700 years,” said Elio Adler. Antisemitism, according to Adler, was a matter of personal responsibility. “When people feel subjectively dissatisfied and look for someone external who is to blame for this subjective dissatisfaction, then we Jews unfortunately lend ourselves very well to it, because there have simply been paths of hatred trodden down over centuries, antisemitic narratives that can very easily be relied upon.”
