A group of Jews living in Germany does not want to be co-opted by the right-wing populist AfD.
«We are of no use as the AfD’s fig leaf», stressed Elio Adler, the founder of the «WerteInitiative». By its own account, this organisation is a loose association of Jewish Germans with several hundred supporters, among them seven members of the Bundestag.
In an interview with «Welt», the AfD chairwoman Frauke Petry had described her party as a «guarantor of Jewish life», alluding to its opposition to Muslim immigration.
Adler, however, does not feel represented by the Alternative für Deutschland. His organisation wants Germany to remain part of the EU and stands for «a values-based offer of integration instead of a fear-based policy of exclusion».
