At the beginning of April we met the deputy chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, Dr Thorsten Lieb (FDP). Elio Adler reported to him on the work of WerteInitiative and the projects coming up for 2022. There was broad agreement that free democratic society must be defended robustly against its enemies. At the same time it needs an emotional cohesion through which freedom and democracy are filled with life anew every day. The concept of “constitutional patriotism” is indeed right for this, but at the same time low on emotion – while other concepts for the emotional cohesion of society in turn carry the danger of nationalist misuse. A challenge we should discuss. We are glad to have in Dr Lieb such a competent politician in the Bundestag, one so conscious of the values of freedom.
