Last week we met with Parliamentary State Secretary Dr Jens Brandenburg at the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF, Federal Ministry of Education and Research). After presenting our work, we discussed the need to address antisemitism through the active promotion of civic education and media literacy, both in extracurricular education and in school lessons. In this way we can secure, as early as at school, the foundations for a coexistence borne by liberal-democratic values. To this end the BMBF coordinates various research projects and pilot projects and supports the development of educational materials. We agreed that the practical implementation of the education-policy objectives of the „Nationale Strategie gegen Antisemitismus“ (NASAS, National Strategy against Antisemitism) requires strong cooperation between the federal government and the Länder. The demand for a revision of the framework curricula with regard to the topic of „current forms of antisemitism“ is not covered by the federal NASAS, because this lies within the responsibility of the Länder. As an association we will therefore shortly approach the education ministries of the federal states. We thank State Secretary Dr Jens Brandenburg for the interesting conversation and for the support offered by his ministry.
