Tacheles! After all the resolutions and declarations of intent against Jew-hatred?

9. July 2018 Antisemitism

We are setting out applicable and concrete expectations which for us represent the blueprint in the fight against antisemitism. By these we will measure who is serious about it.

In recent months there have been a series of resolutions by the Bundestag and by several state governments and state parliaments on confronting antisemitism. We expressly welcome these resolutions!

The many resolutions and well-intentioned declarations of intent must now be cast in concrete form and translated into action. That is why the WerteInitiative – jüdisch-deutsche Positionen was glad to cooperate with the Jewish Forum for Democracy and against Antisemitism (JFDA) and to contribute to the „Statement of Principles on Combating Antisemitism“. The statement of principles is attached to this e-mail.

In this statement of principles we present in summary form the criteria as well as the concrete tasks for political action.

„Now is the time to translate the various resolutions against Jew-hatred at federal and state level into concrete activities,“ says Elio Adler, chairman of the WerteInitiative  jüdisch-deutsche Positionen. „When the fight against antisemitism is spoken of, it is often rather vague and at times appears helpless. In this statement of principles those affected –  we Jewish citizens –  set out what we understand by it. To be in favour of protecting Jewish life and against antisemitism means today, in many places, leaving comfortable, well-trodden paths and tackling problems honestly and sustainably!“

We are pleased at the great number of supporters who are prominently engaged with Jewish life and with confronting antisemitism in Germany and who endorse this statement of principles.

The debate on antisemitism and how to combat it is to receive fresh impetus from a competent quarter. The declaration is intended to counteract the devaluation of the experiences of those affected by antisemitism, the playing down of Israel-related antisemitism, the trivialisation and relativisation of the antisemitism occurring in Muslim milieus, as well as its equation with all forms of group-focused enmity.
