Around eight years ago, on 3 August 2014, the so-called “Islamic State” attacked the main settlement area of the Êzîdî in Sinjar in northern Iraq. The IS henchmen proceeded systematically: men and women were separated. Men and older women were killed immediately. Women and girls were loaded onto buses and sold into slavery, where they were systematically raped and abused.
More than 5,000 Êzîdî were killed and more than 7,000 women and children were abducted. More than 2,500 Êzîdî women are still in IS captivity. On 18 January 2023 the Deutscher Bundestag recognised the genocide against the Êzîdî. But who are the Êzîdî? What does recognition by the German Bundestag mean, above all for coming to terms with the genocide. We talk about this with Zemfira Dlovani, the chairwoman of the Zentralrat der Êzîden in Deutschland.
