We spoke with Shachar Ohel, the uncle of the hostage Alon Ohel, and Liran Berman, the brother of the hostages Gali and Ziv Berman, about the harrowing time since their abduction and about what they currently know of their loved ones’ situation. Shachar and Liran are, like Alon, Gali and Ziv, German citizens. Since the brutal attack by the Islamist terrorist organisation Hamas on the Nova music festival in Israel on 7 October 2023, numerous people are still being held captive as hostages in Gaza – in uncertainty, under unbearable conditions and in some cases with no sign of life. Their families and relatives remain in a barely describable mixture of fear, despair and hope. The question is pressing: what can we do here and now in Germany to bring them and all the other remaining hostages home safely?
