Since the Hamas attack on Israel of 7 October, antisemitism has increased sharply, especially at the universities. Jewish people and people showing solidarity with Israel are threatened and attacked. For a few months now there have repeatedly been protests, occupations and antisemitic graffiti at the universities. Calls for boycotts and actual exclusions of Israeli academics, for example from conferences or publications, are also not rare. Numerous German academics have therefore declared their solidarity, in a joint appeal and without any ifs or buts, with their Jewish students and with Israeli colleagues. We spoke about this, and about the possible perspectives for action, with Prof. Dr Stefan Liebig of the Freie Universität Berlin, who initiated the open letter “Profs against Antisemitism”.
