WI-Talk: University Campus – an Antisemitic Danger Zone

30. November 2023 Antisemitism

Since 7 October, the day on which the Islamist terrorist organisation Hamas committed an antisemitic massacre in Israel, antisemitism in Germany has risen rapidly in all spheres of society. The academic sphere has not been spared either – on the contrary: in the weeks following 7 October, frightening antisemitic incidents occurred here. Some university campuses in Germany have by now become a danger zone for Jewish students.‘ This state of affairs is all the more alarming when one considers that, on the one hand, university places of education ought in fact to be a place of enlightenment and reflection. In addition, this rampant antisemitism – similarly to the sphere of art and culture – is virulent below the radar of society as a whole and therefore receives hardly any of the attention it ought to have. That is why we discussed it in this WI-Talk, with: Hanna Veiler, President of the Jüdische Studierendenunion Deutschland, Klemens Elias Braun, student at the Universität der Künste Berlin and activist in university politics, and Naomi Bennett, student and founder of Coah – Campus ohne Antisemitismus Hilfestelle.
