This evening the Israeli independence day Yom ha’atzmaut begins. Exactly 75 years ago the dream of a Jewish homeland was realised and the modern Jewish state was proclaimed. From the founding of the state onwards, and 75 years later as well, the democratic state has had to assert itself again and again in domestic politics, but above all in foreign policy. Many German Jews have a close connection to Israel, above all as a safe haven, not least because of the antisemitism rampant worldwide. What significance does Israel have for German Jews? What influence does the existence of Israel have on Jewish life in Germany, and what exactly does the simultaneity of several places as an emotional home look like?
