The “Jewish Places” website carries risks

The “Jewish Places” map also harbours potential for misuse, says Elio Adler, chairman of the “WerteInitiative”, which seeks to give Jewish-German positions a voice in public debates. “It is certainly well meant. But it also has to be done well.” Three things matter to him: “First, only places, organisations or institutions for which ‘being Jewish’ is part of their self-definition should appear there.” A Jewish restaurant such as Feinberg’s, he says, certainly belongs in that category. A Jewish lawyer, by contrast, has no business being there. Second, there has to be relevance for the public. “If tourists want to explore Jewish life in Berlin, for example, there is no reason why the office operation of a Jewish organisation should be listed there,” says Adler. The most problematic aspect, however, is that third parties can make entries there. “The institutions concerned must be asked in advance and their permission sought – unless they happen to be public institutions such as Jewish communities.” Full text here.
