The victims are mocked, society is led by the nose, and the city’s moderate, secular Muslims are given a kick in the face. The message is: there is no escaping the Islamists!
Berlin (standing here for the Federal Republic as a whole) is incapable of dealing with political Islam. Its invasiveness, its aggressiveness and its strategy geared towards long-term success are chronically underestimated. Choosing an imam — male or female — whose standing was beyond all doubt could have sent a positive signal to the Muslim community and to German society at large. Sadly, that opportunity was missed and the floor was given to a controversial imam instead. One of the organisers, the Evangelische Kirche (Protestant Church), now explains that Mohammed Matar had been recommended by the Zentralrat der Muslime (Central Council of Muslims in Germany). In doing so, the Church missed the chance to take a political stance of its own.
Did the responsible State Secretary, Ms Chebli, or the Governing Mayor, Mr Müller, ever google Mr Matar’s name?
This constellation makes the memorial service yet another low point in the way the attack has been handled.
